Sarnia - 2012 NHL Alumni Tour presented by Scotiabank

Scotiabank brings the greatest game on ice to Sarnia, giving opportunities to meet some of the most renowned hockey players of all time! No one should miss this unique chance to shake the hands of Hockey Hall of Famers and Stanley Cup winners. For extra excitement we have special guest Coach and Ambassador for the game, Walter Gretzky at this great charity event.

This exhibition game with Sarnia's local heroes from the Law Enforcement All Star Team are excited to get together as Alumni to play with old friends and promote the game of hockey across Ontario, all while raising money for a great cause.

Through the Tour, the NHL Alumni and Scotiabank are able to support an event that raises much-needed funding and awareness for children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities. Sarnia - DIE FLEDERMAUS - UWOPERA Concert Performance : Grace Brothers Antiques

Die Fledermaus, or “The Bat,” the work that surely defines the entire genre of Viennese operetta, actually began as a stage play by Meilhac and Halévy, Offenbach’s librettists. Nevertheless, this Parisian origin did not prevent Johann Strauss from putting his personal stamp on the piece, with a score in which almost every number seems infused with the spirit of dance: polka, galop, czardas, and of course the waltz. The situation of Cosě fan tutte is taken several steps further here, with husbands and wives, mistresses and maids having brief flirtations beyond the bonds of marriage, but there is sadness amidst the gaiety, and a wordly wisdom that returns with the light of day. This is an opera that is timeless, since it springs from long experience of the joy and pain of marriage.

Sarnia - Having Hope At Home : presented by Theatre Sarnia

This production is generously supported by Agri-Urban Buildings Inc. of Dresden.
This acclaimed Canadian comedy has been a hit wherever it’s played since its premiere at the Blyth Festival in 2003. A sidesplitting look at a family learning to love again. On a winter night in a drafty farmhouse a baby is about to arrive. But modern medicine meets midwifery head on in a torrent of family feuding. As tensions rise between three dysfunctional generations, so does the laughter. It takes a baby to heal the rift in this funny, heartwarming story of forgiveness and hope.
“Let’s cut right to the marrow. Having Hope at Home is a big-hearted comedy that will leave you in tears—tears of compassion and recognition as well as tears of laughter.” —Waterloo Record

Screening of The Economics of Happiness

The film features many voices from six continents calling for systemic economic change. The documentary describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. While government and big business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power, people around the world are resisting those policies and working to forge a very different future. Communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm: an economics of localization.

Why are we so lonely when we have so much? Beyond the unhappiness of a disconnected world are new—and very old—ways we can turn it around.

Far from the old institutions of power, people are starting to forge a very different future...

‘Going local’ is a powerful strategy to repair our fractured world—our ecosystems, our societies and our selves

Economic globalization has led to a massive expansion in the scale and power of big business and banking. It has also worsened nearly every problem we face: fundamentalism and ethnic conflict; climate chaos and species extinction; financial instability and unemployment. There are personal costs too. For the majority of people on the planet life is becoming increasingly stressful. We have less time for friends and family and we face mounting pressures at work.

The Economics of Happiness describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, government and big business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, all around the world people are resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of trade and finance—and, far from the old institutions of power, they’re starting to forge a very different future. Communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm – an economics of localization.

We hear from a chorus of voices from six continents including Samdhong Rinpoche, the Prime Minister of Tibet's government in exile, Vandana Shiva, Bill McKibben, David Korten and Zac Goldsmith. They tell us that climate change and peak oil give us little choice: we need to localize, to bring the economy home. The good news is that as we move in this direction we will begin not only to heal the earth but also to restore our own sense of well-being. The Economics of Happiness restores our faith in humanity and challenges us to believe that it is possible to build a better world.
